Take the seven steps to digital security
Seven habits sit under every other guide here. They are not tools. They are the way of thinking that tells you which tools you need, and lets you stop when you have enough.
Steps
7 steps
to tick a step and keep a streak. Reading needs no account.
Make a plan before you buy anything.
Answer what you protect, from whom, how likely the threat is, how bad the result is, and how much trouble you will accept.
Find your weakest link.
The best door lock is worthless if you have cheap window latches. Look at the whole of how you use your information.
Use fewer tools, not more.
A small set that you understand and keep working beats a large set that you cannot check.
Look at the cheap measures first.
A paper shredder is security. Price is not a measure of protection.
Decide who you trust, on purpose.
For each person and service, name what they can reach and what that would mean. Do this offline as well as online.
Make the plan one you will follow.
A plan that is too much work is a plan you abandon in a week, which protects nothing.
Keep checking.
